HBCU Football Draft Picks: Texas

Between 1952 and 2019, 112 football players from Texas HBCUs were drafted by professional Teams.


The 1950s

Nine football players from four different Texas HBCUs were drafted by professional teams during the 1950s.

Bishop College

Bishop College was founded in 1881 with a goal of serving Black students in East Texas. The institution’s original location was in Marshall, Texas but the college was moved to Dallas in 1961 and closed its doors in 1988.

Prairie View A&M University

Prairie View was founded in 1876 and is Texas’ oldest HBCU. It is located in the city of Prairie View, roughly 46 miles west of Houston.

Texas Southern University

Texas Southern University was founded in 1927, under the original name of Houston Junior College. In 1947 the Texas Legislature created the Texas State University for Negroes from what had evolved into the Houston College for Negroes. The institution received the modern Texas Southern name in 1951.

Wiley College

Wiley College was founded in 1873 under the original name Wiley University. The institution is located in Marshall, Texas.

The 1960s

Forty-four football players were drafted from Texas HBCUs during the 1960s. Thirteen of those picks were in the AFL Drafts and 31 of the picks were in the NFL Drafts.

The 1970s

Thirty-two football players were drafted from Texas HBCUs during the 1970s. All of those picks were in NFL Drafts.

The 1980s

Seven football players were drafted from Texas HBCUs during the 1980s. All of those picks were in NFL Drafts.

The 1990s

Eight football players were drafted from Texas HBCUs during the 1990s. All of those picks were in the NFL Drafts.

The 2000s and 2010s

Three football players were drafted by professional teams from Texas HBCUs between 2000 and 2019.

  • Joey Jamison (Texas Southern) was taken by the Green Bay Packers in the 2000 NFL Draft.

  • Tray Walker (Texas Southern) went to the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL’s 2015 Draft.

  • The most recent player to be drafted was Quinton Bell (Prairie View). He was selected in the NFL’s 2019 Draft by the Oakland Raiders.
