Louisiana Economy: Workforce Projections
Summary
The Louisiana Workforce Commission is the state’s comprehensive workforce solution. The Commission provides industry-level employment projections for Louisiana’s parishes, organized into eight Regional Labor Market Areas (RLMA).
The total jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 17,025,086 and the 2032 projection is 17,735,246, representing a 4.2% increase.
The New Orleans and Baton Rouge RLMAs account for the bulk of the state’s current and projected jobs. The two region’s total share in 2022 was 9,719,154 (57.1%) and is projected to be 10,226,631 (5.7%).
Shreveport and Lafayette make up the second regional concentrations of jobs. The two region’s total share in 2022 was 4,378,222 (25.7%) is projected to be 4,506,144 (25.4%).
Monroe, Lake Charles and Alexandria accounted for 2,663,626 (15.6%) of Luisiana’s jobs in 2022 and that is projected to be 2,730,221 (15.4%) in 2032.
The Houma RLMA accounted for 264,084 jobs in 2022. Its figure is projected to be 844,104 in 2032, representing 4.7% of Louisiana’s jobs.
Baton Rouge is projected to see the largest percent change, 5.9%.
Accommodation and Food Services
The total Accommodation and Food Services jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 1,626,595 and the 2032 projection is 1,660,027, representing a 2.0% increase.
Houma is projected to see the largest percent change, 5.8%.
Administrative and Waste Services
The total Administrative and Waste Services jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 885,123 and the 2032 projection is 876,012, representing a decrease of 1.0%.
All RLMAs, except New Orleans, are projected to see net job losses in the Administrative and Waste Services industry.
Agriculture, Fishing, Forestry and Hunting
The total Agriculture, Fishing, Forestry and Hunting jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 71,515 and the 2032 projection is 72,658, representing a 1.6% increase.
Houma is projected to see the largest percent change, 5.7%.
Arts, Entertainment and Recreation
The total Arts, Entertainment and Recreation jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 218,203 and the 2032 projection is 228,736, representing a 4.8% increase.
Lafayette is projected to see the largest percent change, 9.4%. The Houma RLMA is projected to see a decrease of 6.5%.
Construction
The total Construction jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 1,118,445 and the 2032 projection is 1,251,824, representing a 11.9% increase.
Baton Rouge is projected to see the largest percent change, 14.8%.
Educational Services
The total Educational Services jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 1,438,722 and the 2032 projection is 1,484,699, representing a 3.2% increase.
Houma is projected to see the largest percent change, 5.8%.
Finance and Insurance
The total Finance and Insurance jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 454,236 and the 2032 projection is 436,155, representing a decrease of 4.0%.
Houma is projected to see the largest percent change, -13.0%.
Government
The total Government jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 1,187,428 and the 2032 projection is 1,208,967, representing a 1.8% increase.
Houma is the only RLMA projected to see a decrease, 1.5%, in Government jobs.
Health Care and Social Assistance
The total Health Care and Social Assistance jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 2,584,289 and the 2032 projection is 2,846,435, representing a 10.1% increase.
Baton Rouge is projected to see the largest percent change, 12.9%.
Information
The total Information jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 197,645 and the 2032 projection is 198,209, representing a 0.3% increase.
Lake Charles is projected to see the largest percent change, -9.3%. The Baton Rouge and New Orleans RLMAs are the only areas projected to see percent increases, 1.9% and 1.3%, respectively.
Management of Companies and Enterprises
The total Management of Companies and Enterprises jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 170,784 and the 2032 projection is 156,698, representing a decrease of 8.2%.
Monroe is projected to see the largest percent change, -18.8%.
Manufacturing
The total Manufacturing jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 1,139,241 and the 2032 projection is 1,234,998, representing a 8.4% increase.
Baton Rouge is projected to see the largest percent change, 12.5%.
Mining
The total Mining jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 213,585 and the 2032 projection is 212,150, representing a decrease of 0.7%.
Baton Rouge is projected to see the largest percent change, -4.0%.
Other Services
The total Other Services jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 1,454,991 and the 2032 projection is 1,508,881, representing a 3.7% increase.
Baton Rouge is projected to see the largest percent change, 6.0%.
Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services
The total Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 793,005 and the 2032 projection is 838,669, representing a 5.8% increase.
Lafayette is projected to see the largest percent change, 16.1%.
Real Estate and Rental and Leasing
The total Real Estate and Rental and Leasing jobs across all RLMA’s in 2022 was pegged at 260,197 and the 2032 projection is 268,581, representing a 3.2% increase.
Lafayette is projected to see the largest percent change, 7.2%.
Retail Trade
